About Sassafras

The Belted Galloway is a medium sized rare breed of cattle originating from Galloway in south west Scotland.  The breed has adapted to living on the poor upland pastures and windswept moorlands of the region.  They have developed unique methods to deal with the elements.

Belties (as they are affectionately called) have developed a thicker hide and a double coat of hair to insulate against freezing, snowy winters.  In warmer weather they shed the longer guard hair leaving them with a downy undercoat for summer.  The advantage of their thicker hides and double coat is that they do not need to waste energy trying to keep warm in winter.  Instead they can put that energy into developing their size, creating a beast that reaches sexual maturity earlier and can breed for longer.

Belties are non-selective foragers and will eat just about anything.  They won't go through your paddocks and eat only the sweetest juiciest grasses; they'll eat the coarse grasses other breeds would pass by.  They thrive on rough mountainous terrain, allowing you to utilise all of your land to its full potential.  You can also run more beasts per acre.

Belties are naturally polled (no nasty horns) and are generally of a quiet temperament, although they have a strong maternal instinct and will protect their young from any perceived threat.

They have an outstanding low incidence of calving difficulties (0.8%), due to smaller sized calves.  You'll wake up in the morning and find a calf frolicking in your paddock, the mother wandering after it.  Once on the ground, the calf grows very quickly due to the Beltie mother's extremely rich milk.
